I spent several months in the subway videotaping people at the moment they missed their train. I was interested in the shattering quality of disappointment — the way the world can seem to fall apart when you don't get what you want, even something as small as catching one train when another will soon follow. Though originally conceived as a video project, I ultimately decided I wanted the pivotal moment frozen in time. Searching through the footage I found these stills, which inadvertently reference old master oil paintings.
